Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Yumna Maumoon has addressed the recent silent protest through a tweet and ensured that they are working on a solution.
The silent protest in the form of a performance art piece titled “Homeless Artists” by Fine Art Maldives was performed outside the National Art Gallery last Friday, to showcase the art community’s dissatisfaction with the government.
In the performance a young man with multiple slogans painted on his body such as “Sidelined community”, “Stop pimping out our home” and “Permanent collection, permanently gone” stood outside the art gallery to raise awareness regarding the miss use of the center.
In their statement, they questioned the priority that the government is giving to the art and craft community. They also mentioned how the gallery is a community place for artists and aspiring artists to come together to express themselves. However, the space that was provided is not only of poor quality but is rented out on a regular basis for non-art related functions.
