The Ministry of Transport stated that all work on the Kulhudhuffushi Airport project with conclude and domestic flight operations will commence following the completion in July of this year.
In an interview given to PSM by the State Minister of the Ministry of Transport, Mr Ahmed Zuhair stated that the final work has commenced on the terminal of the airport and is expected to be finished by the end of June with the airport opening in July.
Further adding to this he stated that an additional four airports will begin operations this year with three of them by the third quarter this year.
The airports planned to be opened this year are Sh. Funadhoo Airport, N. Maafaru Airport, GDh. Mavarulu Airport, Lh. Madivaru Airport with the Funadhoo and Maafaru airport scheduled to open on the month of August as per the Transport Ministry.
The Kulhudhuffushi Airport was nearly completed last year with a 1200 meter long, 30 meter wide runway but operations did not commence as critical ground services and facilities were not established in time.
During a campaign visit for the parliament elections, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih visited the airport site in Kulhudhuffushi and pledged to finish it at the earliest and get it up to operational status as soon as possible with plans to finish the airport by Eid this year.
