13-year-old girl killed in fatal highway accident

A 13-year-old girl has been killed in a crash on the highway.

The incident occurred near the end of the highway linking Hulhumalé and Sinamale’s Bridge on Tuesday night. The police said the accident was caused by a collision between a motorcycle and an MTCC bus.

A 51-year-old woman was driving the motorcycle with her 13-year-old daughter on the backseat as a passenger. The child was flung by collision from the motorcycle and struck her head. Her helmet broke via the impact.

The girl was taken to Hulhumale’s Treetop Hospital while her mother was brought to Hulhumalé Hospital.

Hulhumalé Hospital said on Tuesday night, around 10.40 pm, a 51-year-old woman from GDh. Madaveli was taken to the hospital. In the accident, she did not sustain serious injuries.

Police confirmed that when she was taken to Tree Top Hospital, the child had already passed away.

Police said the bus involved in the accident drove off and fled the scene following the accident. The bus was stopped near the highway’s U-turn and the 54-year-old driver was eventually arrested.

So far in November, six motor accidents have been recorded. A 31-year-old Ukrainian tourist was killed in Hulhumale earlier this year when an MTCC bus ran over the woman after the driver fell asleep on the wheel.
