The Maldivian Teams Departs to Mauritius for IOIG

The Maldivian Teams departures to Mauritius with for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) which commences Friday.

The Maldives is competing in nine sports in this year’s Games, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach volleyball, Football, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Indoor Volleyball.

IOIG is the second international competition the Maldives competed in. The Maldives have achieved medals in table tennis and badminton in the 1979 IOIG held in Reunion Island. In the latest games held at Reunion, Maldives won 9 out of 10 targeted medals including the first-ever gold received for the Maldives in a multi-sports event by runner Hassan Saaid. This year they are targeting a total of 15 medals.

During the opening ceremony of 2019 held on Friday, the Maldivian flag will be hoisted by national basketball player, Ahmed Zabir.
