Regional Hospital in Kulhudhuffushi launches Cardiac Centre services

On Saturday 12th October, Health Minister Abdulla Ameen inaugurated CT scan and Cardiac Centre services in Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

The new Cardiac Center, established as part of the government’s plan to develop five hospitals across the country to tertiary standards, will provide all non-evasive cardiac tests such as echocardiograms, treadmill testing, and holder monitoring.

In the past year alone, 74 emergency patients have been referred to other hospitals for CTs and cardiac screening, according to the Health Ministry.

Most of these patients were referred for treatment on chartered or scheduled flights, respectively costing MVR 125,600 or MVR 14,966 per person. Furthermore, added food and accommodation costs include family members.

The ministry, therefore, stated that the implementation of these facilities in the southern region would significantly reduce referral costs.

According to figures from the Ministry of Health, an average of 305 patients are receiving regular care from Kulhudhuffushi Hospital. This number rises to 650 on Saturday. Various patients from Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani and Noonu Atolls travel to Kulhudhuffushi for treatment which is unavailable in most islands.

Health Ministry reports that more than 64,000 people in the region can access the newly established hospital facilities. Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital currently employs 28 doctors, 78 nurses, and 16 other physicians.
