Generous Local Councils – An Example To All Of Us

The month of Ramadan has always been a month full expenses for all families across the country. The holy month is a period of giving and seeking blessings and provides a special reason for communities to extend help to others in anyway they can.

Recently before the start of the month long of fasting, we witnessed a very beautiful scene. An initiative by the local council of AA. Bodufolhudhoo in the year 2014 has now become a country wide trend. Local councils of many islands have come forward with various creative ways to provide assistance to thier community such as gifting households with rice sacks and providing free electricity and so on.

Giving charity is an important practice to adopt during the holy month, and it is really heartwarming to see local island councils setting an example to the rest of us.

List of some councils that have participated in the trend;

  • Sh. Funadhoo Council

To provide free waste disposal services and cable TV free of charge, for the 500 or so households in the island.

  • HA. Hoarafushi Council

Provided a sack of rice and sugar for the 400 or so households in the island.

  • HA. Ihavandhoo Council

Provided a discount of MVR 500 from the electricity bill of every household.

  • H Dh. Kulhudhuffushi Council

Provided a Mus’haf for every 1700 or so households in the island.

  • H Dh. Kumundhoo Council

  • H Dh. Naivaadhoo Council

Provided a case of eggs for every household in the island.

  • Sh. Narudhoo Council

Provided a sack of onions and free cable TV services for the 85 or so households in the island.

  • Sh. Maaungoodhoo Council

To provide free waste disposal for all households of the island.

  • R. Ungoofaaru Council

To provide free electricity to the 1800 or so households in the island.

  • K.  Himmafushi Council

A tuna fish case and an egg case to every household in the island.

  • G Dh. Gadhhoo Council

A basmathi rice sack and free waste for every household in the island.

  • F. Magoodhoo Council

Provided a 50% sponsorship of the electricity bill for every household.

  • N. Holhudhoo Council

To provide free waste disposal for all households of the island.

  • AA. Himandhoo Council

Allowed locals to gather coconuts, dry palms leaves, and wood from the forest.

  • GA. Dhevvadhoo Council

To provide free waste disposal for all households of the island.

  • L. Dhanbidhoo Council

Provided a 50% sponsorship of the electricity bill for every household.

  • A Dh. Maamigili Council

An onion sack for every household in the island.

  • AA. Bodufolhudhoo Council

Provided a 50% sponsorship of the electricity bill for every household.

Ramadan is a month of giving, and this is an excellent initiative by the local councils to celebrate the spirit of the holy month while setting an example to us all.
