Confident Of Victory, Afeef Claims He Has Secured Enough Votes

MP-elect of Vilifushi constituency Mr Hassan Afeef has assured that he has secured enough votes and has full confidence in winning the MDP ticket for the parliament presidency.

The former Home Minister Mr Afeef who is also backed by President Ibrahim Solih states that he has spoken to the 65 MP elects of the ruling party and have secured more the 40 votes for his nomination.

His competition for the speaker’s post is the veteran politician, MP-elect of North Hithadhoo constituency Mr Mohamed Aslam, who has the backing of the former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Last week from the opposition, People’s National Congress and the Progressive Party of Maldives has also announced their support for Mr Afeef.

A candidate for the position of the speaker from the ruling party, Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) will be selected after an internal election among the party’s parliamentary group members.

The inaugural session of the 19th People’s Majilis is scheduled to be held on 28th of May in which a speaker is to be elected as well.
