A foreign male suspect has been caught by the immigration department at Velana International Airport on suspicions of human trafficking. The department withheld any other information about the suspect.
He reportedly arrived in the Maldives by violating the immigration law and deceiving the purpose of his visit to the authorities. According to the Maldives Department of Immigration, the suspect played out a fake ploy by stating that he was visiting the country with his wife for a holiday. He apparently left the woman he claimed to be his wife and used her passport in his attempt to flee the country.
The immigration also stated that the suspect has now been taken into police custody.
Immigration has started to take strict measures in order to fight transnational crimes and minimize any possibilities of illegal trade within the country. They have also upgraded their security systems to regulate any possible “passport scams”.
