MDP Members Take Majority Seats In The Parliamentary Committees

MDP has taken the majority of the committee seats in the 2019 parliament. The committee made to revise the laws of the parliament made and executed the decision to increase the number of committees in the parliament from 13 to 17.

A statement received from the administrative committee to the temporary committee formed by the parliament stated that except “241” all other committees must appoint 11 members.

In the context of appointing members to committees, Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) with their super-majority in the parliament as a positive factor, is believed to get 133 seats in the committees.

5 PPM members and 5 Jumhoory party members will reportedly be appointed a seat in the committee as well. The 3 members from the party PCN will be appointed a seat from 6 committees. In addition, 4 committee seats will be appointed to AMD party members from the parliament. 17 individual parliament members who do not belong to any party will also get a seat from a total of 14 committees in the Parliament.

According to the statement released, the committee responsible to firm the constitution known as the “Two Four One” must contain members from all the parties in the parliament.

In today’s parliament meeting, some of the members from the temporary committee discussed to increase the numbers of members in each committee to 13. However, the decision is yet to be finalized.
