The former Vice President of the Maldives, Ahmed Adeeb, who was recently acquitted of allegations regarding his involvement in MMPRC corruption scandal and ‘Finifenmaa’ boat explosion, has departed to India for medical treatment.
Adeeb was arrested over an alleged plot to assassinate nation’s former president Abdullah Yameen as he was returning to Male’ after completing the pilgrimage in Mecca in the year 2015. The medical board allowed him a one-year compassionate leave to receive medical treatments.
Home minister Imran Abdullah stated that Adeeb would return on 26th of this month if there is no further need to stay in India after he has completed the treatment.
Adeeb accompanied by his wife Mariyam Nashwa was escorted by three correction officers and three police officers. They are to remain with Adeeb during his time in India.
Although many people have shown concerns and disapprobation regarding the decision, police commissioner Mohamed Hameed assured the nation’s safety and Adeeb’s security as they have doubled their forces.
The former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb is on a house arrest for 15 days which dues at 18th of this month. However, his trip abroad would halt the sentence.
