The Speaker of Parliament, the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the government has no interest in bringing Maldivians who went to fight in wars elsewhere back home.
Speaking to the press in his current visit to Srilanka, he stated that jihadist should not be allowed back in the country after their fight in the Middle East is over and it is a tactic they use to create further terror activities in other nations.
The issue of bringing back jihadist fighters is a global issue and one country cannot solve the issue, he added. “It is a global problem and needs to be addressed in the international stage”.
Furthermore, he stated that there is an estimated 160 Maldivians fighting abroad and 40 children with them. However, it is difficult to discern the true nationalities if the children as per the way the jihadist fighters carry out these acts.
