Parliament Rejects Bill To Increase Senior Citizen Allowance

The Parliament rejects the amendment proposed to the Pension Act to increase Senior Citizens Allowance to MVR 10,000.

The bill proposed by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir was rejected with the majority vote of 58 members present in the session.

According to the current laws, every senior citizen registered for the allowance will receive a total of MVR 5,000 from the state as a pension. However, in the proposed amendment, if the amount generated by other pensions are less than MVR 10,000, the total including the State Pension and Basic Pension should add up to MVR 10,000.

Members expressed that no complaints were formerly submitted regarding the Senior Citizens Allowance..
