Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to provide ferry services for three more atolls in the near future.
According to MTCC, the three atolls include Meemu Atoll, Faafu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll where ferry services were previously provided by a private company named ‘’Vermilion’’.
The CEO of MTCC, Mr Hassan Shaah said that they have provided the necessary details to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and is waiting for their approval to start the services.
MTCC currently provides transport services to a total of 169 islands in the country where nearly 15 million passengers have travelled using the company’s inter-atoll transport services last year alone.
They have also stated that they will continue to provide transport services to the people eventhough they faced a loss of MVR82 million in transport sector last year after the opening of Sinamle’ Bridge. Before the bridge, MTCC is said to have provided their services to 20 to 50 thousand customers per day which have drastically fallen to 4000 to 5000 customers per day.
To cover up the loss, MTCC has begun expanding its private hire services.
