Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid says the government is working hard to re-establish diplomatic ties with Qatar and Iran and is unsure of when it can rekindle the bilateral relationship.
Minister Shahid was summoned to the parliament on Wednesday, to answer questions raised by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir’s in regards to the progress of re-establishing the relationship with Qatar.
In his statement, Minister Shahid claimed that due to the former president of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Maldives had built a negative reputation amongst other countries hence their main focus is to restore the Maldives place within the international community. He further explained the importance of building strong diplomatic ties.
To conclude, he ensured that the government is taking all the measures that they can and emphasised that building a diplomatic relationship after severing ties require time.
Diplomatic ties with Qatar established on May 1984 was cut in earlier in June 2017 during the Presidency Yameen. The decision was made after the uproar of allegations by Saudi Arabia towards Qatar for enabling terrorism amongst gulf countries.
