Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar arrived in the Maldives on Tuesday to take part in the 4th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC).
IOC scheduled t to be held in Paradise Island Resort is a conference organized by the India Foundation in association with the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore and the theme for this year is “Securing the Indian Ocean region: Traditional and Non-Traditional Challenges”.
Delegates from over 40 countries including members of parliament, personal armed forces, ambassadors, senior diplomats, senior bureaucrats, prominent authors, academicians and media personnel will attend the conference.
Also during the visit, the two nations signed a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) as a way for the Indian Government to aid in investigating and prosecuting criminal matters. Minister Dr Jaishankar also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid to review the progress of commitments made during the State Visits of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This is the first time the Minister visited the Maldives.
