“Honor” Killing is NOT Islam

Palestinian women are protesting for women’s rights after a 21 year old was reportedly killed in a so-called “honor killing”. Honor killing is, the killing of a relative, especially a girl or woman, who is perceived to have brought dishonor on the family.

These Palestinian women are demanding justice,

For killing of the 21 year old Israa Ghrayeb, the 21 year old died last week after being hospitalized in Bethlehem with severe injuries after being allegedly beaten by her male relatives for posting a video on social media with her soon-to-be fiance. On the other hand, the family states that Israa suffered from psychological disorders and threw herself from the second floor, which led to her hospitalization and death. Conflictions about the cause of the death gets even worse with her with her brother-in-law Safi saying she died of a heart attack.

Besides all this talks, a spokesman from the Palestinian ministry of health, Osama Al-Najjar, rejected the family’s account in an interview with Palestinian state television on Wednesday.

According to Najjar, Ghrayeb’s body had “clear signs of abuse”.

She was a popular makeup artist, but for the reason that the assault was taken place was because she posted pictures of her public meeting with her fiancé before the official wedding ceremony.

Protesters across the world says it was a so called “honor killing” and they are demanding justice as well a change in the constitution regarding the historical law, which allows those guilty to be given reduced sentences. Also the protesters are arguing government with rising issues to provide more legal protection for women.

“Violence against women is one of the main reasons for the regression of society’s performance and its opportunities in achieving sustainable development” says protester Nour Odeh.

Honor killings are not under any religious theory of Islam and the brutal truth is patriarchy exists everywhere.
