Maldives Police Service has foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 72 phones and other contraband into Maafushi Prison.
Police arrested two men aged 26 and 21 years on Saturday night who attempted to smuggle the contraband.
According to the police, 72 mobile phones, 62 phone chargers, seven sim cards, 22 USB drive, 22 headsets, three knives, two box of cutter knives and 12 saw was confiscated from the two men.
Maafushi magistrate court remanded both men to jail with no bail.
Contraband are often smuggled into Maldives biggest Maafushi Prison. Prisoners enjoy a flexible black market inside the prison where everything from drugs to smart phones are available to buy.
