National stadium filled with expatriates for registrations

coperatemaldives.com

The national stadium has been filled with illegal immigrant workers for registrations. After the current government declared strict rules over illegal immigrants, a lot of workers are tirelessly struggling to register themselves legally.

Previously the registration took place in the Prosecutor General’s Office were a branch of Economic Ministry conducted the registration procedures with 100 appointments per day. For the service, hundreds of immigrants queued hours earlier. This was notified to the responsible authorities where they conducted the queuing up procedure to be changed to the national stadium as there are a large number of people.

At the national stadium immigrants photos are being taken with personal information noted and later on they are brought for appointments by sending an SMS to their phones. For distinguishing purposes, one finger of each person is marked as well.

The turnout of people to the national stadium was in abundance, therefore, special operations police officers were sent there to manage the people and arrange them in an easier way.

There are immigrants who have been working in the Maldives for 13 plus years illegally to date. None of the previous governments have enforced strict rules to stop and reduce the illegal immigration of workers and making them work with minimal salaries.
