Heavy rain has flooded the streets of southernmost Addu City. The police have evacuated people from houses which were damaged due to flood.
Addu City Mayor Abdullah Sadiq on Saturday said the roads of the islands in the atoll have been flooded due to continuous rainfall since 10 pm on Friday night. It has been reported that flood water entered over 50 homes, said Sadiq.
MNDF Southern Area is working to recede floodwaters. MNDF said sandbags are being placed outside some houses to prevent further entry of water.
They also stated that they have provided assistance to a total of 140 houses thus far including 44 houses from hithadhoo, 4 from maradhoo, 12 from maradhoo feydhoo, 43 from feydhoo, 10 from hulhudhoo, and 27 from meedhoo.
MET office issued yellow alert until 12 pm on Saturday afternoon to southern areas. MET office said Addu city experienced 107 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours.
The atoll has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Friday night.
