The Indian embassy in the Maldives, today, stated that India resumed export of onion to the Maldives from October 10 onwards.
As per the halt of the exportation of onions from India due to the annihilation of the farmlands, during the most recent visit of the president of the Maldives to India, India has agreed to export the necessary supplies to the Maldives under a standard procedure.
Onion supplies from the markets have been completely undermined since last Thursday, until the present. Subsequently, the prices of the onions have raised up to MVR50 per kilogram.
Even though the decrease in the supply of onions has drastically increased the demand and prices, onions are now being imported to the Maldives as done previously.
The embassy further stated that the continued export to the Maldives from India reflects mutual respect that underpins the bilateral relationship that exists between both countries
The severe flood due to the heavy rain in India has destroyed its 35% of the onion farmlands.
