Speaker of Parliament and former president of the prime party of the governing coalition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed has announced plans to run for a second term as the president of MDP in the upcoming party elections.
The party opened applications to run for the vacant posts of President and Vice President on Monday. The election is arranged to be held on November 22nd to elect members to the posts.
Individuals interested in applying for the posts are to submit their applications before Saturday.
Though Nasheed did not reveal any further details regarding his plan to run for a second term as MDP president, he tweeted announcing his candidacy and expressed hope while requesting his party members to vote for him in the upcoming internal election of the party.
Shortly after Nasheed’s announcement, several members of the party began a social media campaign to re-elect Nasheed for the post.
Nasheed was elected as the President of the Maldivian Democracy Party in August 2014.
