On Tuesday 22nd October, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed attended Japan’s new emperor Naruhito’s formal enthronement ceremony.
Earlier this year, after his father, Emperor Akihito’s abdication, he ascended the Chrysanthemum throne.
Besides President Solih, there were several heads of state and officials including Prince Charles, the presumed successor to the British throne, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-Yeon.
All in all, there were heads of state and other dignitaries from over 170 countries to witness the beginning of the new emperor’s reign.
A change in the monarch of Japan’s imperial throne is a rare and special occurrence with the crowning of the former Emperor being on January 7, 1989.
State head from the Maldives, then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was present for this ceremony as well.
At the invitation of the Japanese government, the first couple and a delegation are presently on an official trip to Japan. The aim of this visit is to consolidate bilateral relations between the two countries.
