Indian Embassy in Maldives announced on Sunday that amid India’s onion scarcity, India will continue to export onions to Maldives.
Prices of onion spiraled in India following the destruction of onion fields in the country due to severe climate. Although India will import 100,000 tons of onion from other countries to tackle extreme shortages, India will ensure that an adequate supply of onions will be provided to the Maldives.
Onion is primarily shipped to Maldives from India.
Maldives suffered an onion shortage last October owing to an operational discrepancy in India that stopped the loading of onion on cargo ships at sea. Around the period, there was a dramatic spike in onion prices.
Maldives and India have an arrangement to import onion from India. Under the treaty, even if India ceases exporting onion to Maldives, under special arrangements, India will provide onion to the Maldives.
