The Maldives Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure has announced the development of 6 new regional airports.
Minister Mohamed Aslam, revealed state’s plan while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Maafaru International Airport.
While speaking, Minister Aslam said “in addition to the airports that are currently being developed, we need about 6 more airports. Our government is working to develop these airports within a 5-year period.”
Furthermore, he added the planned locations for regional airport development have already been finalized.
In addition to this, he also noted the domestic maritime public transportation system will be implemented in 2020 in a bid to connect local islands via sea transport.
Moreover, the current administration announced opening 5 airports in the Maldives this year which includes Kulhudhuffushi Airport, Maafaru Airport which has become an international one.
In addition to this, other airports include ones at Gaaf Alif Maavarulu, Shaviyani Funadhoo and Lhaviyani Madivaru.
The current administration, earlier pledged on establishing airports within 20 minutes of each inhabited island of the country.
