A petition has been made and a lot of locals have started to sign to control the rent in Male’.

The petition currently drafted by the Male’ Tenants Union (MTU) started and initiated this even near the Carnival is in the capital yesterday.

The main purpose of this petition is to raise the voices of thousands who live in Male’ for rent and let them be clearly heard to the floor of the People’s Majilis. The petition calls for the basic rights of all the tenants living in Male’ and its respective zones, as well as to reduce and control the rent to a believable limit.

The Union stated that they have initiated this act and the petition as a lot of locals requested them to help with their situation and help their voices to be heard on People’s Majilis. They have also stated that 63% of Maldivians who live in Male’ are living after paying rent.

Even though a petition is already being in motion, the current government has already passed a drafted law through the People’s Majilis regarding renting and the rights of both parties. The law has not been debated upon and not being addressed yet fully. Even though this draft consists of the rights and how a rented place should be, no story about rent controlling has been addressed into this draft either.
