The total state expenditure for expenses regarding the corona virus is MVR 560 million and not MVR 595 million as stated by the Speaker of the Parliament, states the Government.
In a press conference held at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), the spokesperson for the operation, Mohamed Mabrouq Aziz stated that only a total of MVR 560 million has been spent for expenses regarding the corona virus. In contrast the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed reported that a total spent of MVR 595 million have been spent on quarantine facilities.
“The total includes expenses made by the National Disaster Management Center (NDMA) and the Health Ministry for preparations efforts for the corona virus which amounts for a total of MVR 389 million. The money was spent on PPE, medical equipment, testing equipment, reagents, medical consumables, and the operation of NEOC”, Mabrouq highlighted explaining the details of the expenses.
Many have been calling out the government to publicize the details of the government expenses regarding the pandemic preparations and the mismatch of numbers reported by government officials have come under heavy criticism.
