Last month, the items mostly being tried to smuggle into prisons under Maldives Correctional Services have been electronic devices and drugs.
In the results and charts shown by Corrections, last month the Maafushi prison, Asseyri prison and Male’ prison had confiscated 44 phones which were tried to smuggle in illegally. 229 grams of drugs had been caught by the Maafushi prison in the same way.
Other items which were tried to be smuggled into the above 3 prisons includes, 38 SIM cards, 19 phone chargers and more than 20 items considered illegal to be brought into the prison.
Such illegal items are usually transported into the prisons through food and beverage packets and in means of using the human body. It had been highlighted that such smuggles are often encouraged and supported by families of the prisoners as well as prison officers.
However, last month the visits to the prison by the prisoner’s families have been stopped due to the rapid spreading of COVID-19. Correction has not yet stated any details about the methods used to smuggle these illegal items into the prison.
