New regulations permitting foreign lawyers to practice in the country have been published by the Bar Council.
The new regulations states that after certain requirements are met foreign lawyers can represent a client in a Maldivian court for a limited period of time under a one permit. This permit can only be requested by registered law firms operating in the country, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office.
Foreign lawyers can only be hired for cases in which the technical or capable lawyers for the specific case are not available in the country.
