A bill granting state privileges to judges who lawfully retire have been approved by the parliament floor.
Mr. Riyaaz Rasheed of Vilufushi constituency submitted the amendment which was passed with 25 out of 56 lawmakers voting in favor of the bill. Members from MDP didn’t participate in the vote.
The bill was passed with no new amendments after revisions by the sub committee, which has garnered massive criticism in social media and from the public.
With the ruling coalition, MDP highly opposed to the bill, the amendments are likely to be reversed in the 9th parliament term, in which MDP has secured a super majority in the recent parliamentary election. Questions have been raised whether President Solih would ratify the bill as it is as well.
Yesterday’s session concluded the last sitting for the current term with Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Qasim Ibrahim stating that 94% of the tasks they have set out to do have been completed successfully.
