The security adviser-level security dialogue between Maldives, India and Sri Lanka are to resume after the halt during former Maldivian President Yameen’s regime. The plan to restart the dialogue followed after the Colombo terrorist attacks and the Indian Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to the neighboring countries.
According to reports, Mauritius and Seychelles might also join the security dialogue as the threat of terrorism grows within the Indian Ocean Region.
The establishment of a radar network and defence training centre and agreements made in Modi’s weekend visit to Male demonstrates India’s vital role as the net-security provider in the region.
Three NSA-level meetings on maritime trilateral cooperation had been held earlier, in Male’ in 2011, in Colombo in 2013 and in New Delhi in 2014. A fourth NSA-level meeting was to be held in the Maldives. However, in the former President of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen’s presidency, the meetings halted as the government didn’t take initiative.
Now, after Modi’s recent visit to the Maldives and the growing relationship between the countries, the hopes of restarting the talks have been revived.
