Parliament Passes Three Resolutions in Regards to Fishing

The parliament has passed three resolutions regarding fishing in yesterday’s session.

The first resolution passed was by Dhuvaafaru MP Ismail Ahmed calling for foreign boats to enter the Maldives to purchase fish from Maldivian boats won by 65 votes. In addition to this, agreements with four parties to buy fish from Maldivian fishermen and conduct an analysis to allow foreign vessels to enter Maldivian waters and purchase fish from Maldivian boats were terminated.

The Resolution by Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan that states for neighbourhood fish factories to be established in islands with the cooperation of both the public and island council was passed with 72 votes and called to identify the resources required to start the factories. It also called for identifying ways in which the island or city council can be involved in the operations of the factory and providing the opportunity to open and establish these factories.

The third resolution that was presented by Mid-Maafannu MP Ibrahim Rasheed to identify Maldivian fishing areas and establish offshore platforms was passed with 71 votes and called for a fair price to be given. It also called for easier methods to sell fish, the establishment of offshore platforms to sell fish and to allow fishermen to travel further away from islands.
