Housing Minister Aminath Athifa has revealed that the Ministry has been ordered by the Attorney General’s Office (AG) to suspend the housing project in Lhaviyani Atoll, Naifaru.
In response to a question raised on Monday by the National Development and Heritage Committee of Parliament, Minister Athifa said they received on Sunday a letter from the AG office indicating that the plan could not be pursued at the time. The letter also directed them to restart the bid venture.
Included in the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) was the project to establish 100 housing units in Naifaru. The project is one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidential commitments.
Minister Athifa expressed her concern about the delay and stated that the government would like to complete projects like these as soon as possible. However, due to obstacles such as the instructions given by the AG Office, the projects are impeded and can not move forward.
”We received a letter from the AG Office today stating that the Naifaru housing project cannot be pursued at this time. The project is a pledge included in the PSIP for 2019. The letter outlined several lengthy points and instructed us to reopen the project for bidding”, Minister Athifa said.
The minister also said she takes personal responsibility for the delay in completing major projects that are part of presidential pledges. She added that she would see the pledges being fulfilled even if it meant restarting efforts again.
