Flight movements to VIA increase in December

The flight movements to Velana International Airport (VIA) has observed a record increase in December.

According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) – the airport’s operator – flight movement picked up from 01 December onward.

As per MACL, on 01 December the total number of flight movements were recorded at 226.

While, the last recorded peak flight movement was from December 2018 with 216 movements.

According to MACL, on 01 December the total international flight movements were recorded at 102.

In addition, the total domestic flight movements for the day was recorded at 121.

Moreover, the surge in flight movement coincides with peak tourism season for Maldives.

The tourism sector of Maldives is a seasonal one, with peak movement by end of ever year.

As such, arrivals usually pick up in quantity around end of November ever year and lasts into February-March of the following year.

Meanwhile, tourist arrivals to Maldives have been constantly improving while crossing a record 1.5 million mark on 27 November.

Moreover, the country’s major tourism promotion act MMPRC has revised their projection from 1.5 million to 1.6 million visits by end of 2019.

Earlier, the Ministry of Tourism had also revised their tourism target for the year in light of improved arrivals.
