The time is right to open back the country, says foreign health experts working in the Maldives.
The Maldivian government started phase one of easing the lock down on the Greater Male’ Area, which was imposed on mid-April. Dr. Bruce Stover, part of a medical delegation from South Africa collaborating with Maldivian health professionals in the fight against the virus, in a press conference at the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) made the statement, further praising the level of public awareness in the country.
“Fearfulness is something we need to overcome. No one in the world can say yes or no to opening up. It will be in your best interest to open up and to make sure you have the basic things like PPEs and protocols in place. And just educate, educate, and educate. It is wonderful to work with educated people…It is also important to get some money. I won’t say it is too early or too late. It is probably the right time to start (opening up).”, stated Dr. Stover, addressing the issue of the removal of the lock down.
With a background in working with epidemics such as Malaria, Cholera, and Typhoid, Dr. Stover is part of the team of medical experts from South Africa which was brought to the country to assist in effectively containing the virus on request by Tourism Ministry.
