The implementation of cultural and human rights has progressed in the Maldives says special rapporteur Karima Bennoune
United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Karima Bennoune, who visited the Maldives on the 9th of June this year had said that there have been a lot of improvements and progression in the field of cultural and human rights in the Maldives.
On a news conference held today, Bennoune spoke positively of the Maldivian government and how the correct and necessary measures they are taking to resolve various issues in the Maldives have led to profound progress in the development of human rights in the country.
Regarding preventing radicalization and spreading of extremist ideology in the Maldives, Bannoune stated that these ideologies would be an obstacle for many things including the freedom of speech in the country and development of cultural competence.
Bennoune added that extremist thoughts and ideologies subjects to hate crime, violence and terrorism. The attack on “Dhaarul Aasaaru” in the year 2012 shows that this issue is not to be taken lightly by the government and she strongly demands the Maldivian government to thoroughly investigate this attack again.
In this trip to the Maldives, Bannoune paid a visit to the heritage minister, education minister and tourism minister discussing ways to protect human rights in the country.
She is to write a comprehensive report based on this trip to the Maldives which will be presented to the United Nations human rights council session scheduled for March 2020.
