Maldives Customs Service (MCS) implements the Global Travel Assessment System (GTAS) to receive real-time passenger information.
This project is conducted by the World Customs Organization (WCO), supported by the United States Customs and Border Protection.
WCO had visited the Maldives Customs Service (MCS) earlier this month led by Chief Customs Officer Mohamed Afzal who provided a comprehensive review of the operational, intelligence and interdiction efforts being made at Velana International Airport.
According to Customs, the first phase of this project has been completed and they are planning to finish the entire process by the year 2020. In addition to being able to receive passenger information, they will also be able to speed up the luggage checking process and bring overall improvements in the entire operation.
The training was provided to Customs, targeting officers as well as the IT support team, police officers, immigration officers and MNDF officers, in order to become self-sufficient in long term use and maintenance of the GTAS system.
