Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid delivered a statement at the ongoing 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Saturday.
Minister Shahid is representing the Maldives at the summit which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
His statement during the summit touched on two key topics; climate change and terrorism.
While speaking at the summit, Foreign Minister stated that climate change is the “most precarious” challenge facing the Maldives.
He asserted that the value of international cooperation amongst member states could only be attained through the recognition of these challenges and the application of collective political will to comprehensively address them.
In addition, Minister Shahid reiterated Maldives’ well-known position on the issue of Palestine, expressing support for the creation of an independent and sovereign state for the Palestinian people.
The 18th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of NAM, held from 25-26 of October, was attended by 120 countries, with the theme of “Upholding the Bandung Principles to ensure concerted and adequate response to the challenges of the contemporary world”
NAM was founded in 1961 during the fall of colonialization in the continents of Africa, Asia, and Latin America when the Cold War was at its peak.
