Many Embassies of Maldives are established to give jobs to certain families – MP Ali Hussain

While debating on foreign service bill at the Parliamentary session, MP Ali Hussain said that many Embassies of the Maldives are established in foreign countries are to give jobs to certain families.

He said that, 2008 seems to put an end to the family rulings in Maldives but looking at the current situation in foreign service state the otherwise. He also said that, in the foreign services all the ranks of jobs are given to certain families.

“We know that we have too many foreign embassies and high commissions of the Maldives in the world even though we are incapable of having this many. But what did we do about this? What benefits are we getting for the economy of the Maldives? Are we gaining any investments to the Maldives? We should think deeply about this. It is deeply saddening to have these many embassies established just to create jobs for certain families. This is something we shouldn’t do” He said during the debate.

Nevertheless, he highly praised the work of High Commissioner of Maldives to the UK, Dr Farahanaz Faisal. He highlighted the work she has been doing to promote the fishing industry of the Maldives.

Furthermore, MP Ali Hussain criticized Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid for undertaking duties as foreign minister and being the President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly. He said that, according to the Maldives constitution, as the Foreign Minister, he cannot undertake any other duty which gain any financial benefits, yet he is gaining financially for being the President of the 76th UNGA.

“Regarding this matter, we know that he (foreign minister) is gaining financial benefits. However, foreign minister is doing something that is not allowed in the constitution and the foreign service bill is here during the same time in the parliament floor, raises many questions for us”

Finally, he advised foreign minister to undertake only one duty instead of two.
