Wife of Maldivian In Indonesian Parliament

Indonesian wife of a Maldivian has won the seat for Jakarta South constituency at the Indonesian parliament, in the recent Indonesian elections.

MP elect Ms. Tati Rachmawati is the wife of Mr Ahmed Haleem, a popular face in the education sector in the Maldives.

With 180 candidates contesting, Ms. Tati secured the fifth seat from the 9 seats allocated for the constituency. A member of the PKB party, of the current President Joko Widodo’s presidential coalition, wife of Mr. Haleem has been in politics since her youth. After losing the election in the previous parliamentary election, she continued to work in the parliament as a secretary for an incumbent MP.

Her campaign, which started 6 months prior to the elections, was very successful with Mr. Haleem himself participating in the campaign. Employing activities such as walking door to door; a very popular campaign activity in the Maldives but new to Indonesia, was a very joyful experience he recalled.

The father of two kids, Mr. Haleem met his wife Ms. Tati at college two years ago, while abroad in Srilanka studying for a business degree.

As for future plans, Mr. Haleem noted his wife Ms. Tati’s keen interest for the Maldives, with multiple projects currently underway in the country. He also states that work will be done to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Maldives as well.
