The United States of America has released a report expressing concern over the lack of religious freedom in the country.
In a report prepared by their State Department, it stated that the laws in the Maldives have no room for other religious beliefs other than Islam.
This report came during police probe into those who commit blasphemy against Islam, such people also receive death threats and other forms of intimidation from the public, the report said, specifically noting the cases of Aishath Velezinee and Shahindha Ismail, both of whom came under fire for allegedly blasphemous remarks.
It also referred to the various non-profit organizations that were linked to rising in radicalism fundamentalism amongst the members of the communities and alleged that the government encouraged the trend.
Furthermore, it was stated that the US continuously encourages the Maldivian government on all official states visits or calls to be more tolerant and accepting of other religions and let people of other faith practice what they believe in the country.
