Police arrest man with fireworks

Police have arrested a man with fireworks in his pockets, an offence under Maldivian laws.

Maldivian laws prohibit import and use any sort of firework. The ban was introduced in the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s era.

Police said they arrested a 37-year old man from the capital Male’ City after it was found that he had fireworks on him. More fireworks were found when police searched his home.

The man denied that he was the owner of the fireworks found at his home. But the Criminal Court remanded him to jail for seven days.

Only the government, namely Maldives National Defence Force, are allowed to use fireworks in the Maldives. Nevertheless fireworks are used by the government occasionally to celebrate achievements.
