Through the unification of the Maldives Media Council (MMC) and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BROADCOM), heads of local media have endorsed Parliament’s attempts to regulate media.
The Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament made the decision to combine the two bodies and set up for the purpose of a sub-committee composed of four representatives. Velidhoo MP Abdulla Shafeeq, Villimale MP Ahmed Ushaam, Gan MP Mohamed Wisam, and Ibrahim Riza, Guraidhoo MP, are the members on the sub-panel.
On Monday night, the Sub Committee held a meeting with top local media officials to discuss the merger of the two entities. Two different laws develop the Media Council and BROADCOM.
Although BROADCOM consists of seven members appointed by the President who is authorized by the Parliament, the Media Council consists of eight members elected from among local media and seven representatives from the public. Most of the media members present at the meeting recommended that the merged entity be configured to include representatives elected from among the media in addition to members chosen by Parliament and from among the government.
