Govt approves cessation of Maldivian Democracy Network

Maldives Government on Tuesday morning has gone ahead in their decision to dissolve Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN).

The organization came under public and media scrutiny following their publication of a research report titled ‘Preliminary Assessment on Radicalisation in Maldives’ which contained derogatory statements against Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Following the network’s publication of the report, a citizen had filed a case at Maldives Civil Court against MDN.

Police had forwarded the case to Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment following a thorough investigation for further action.

The ministry reserves mandated authority in overseeing locally registered clubs, associations and organizations.

Under the Maldives Associations Act, an organization may be disbanded with a court order while the registrar of the organization has power to disband it without a court order as well.

The Act dictates if judiciary finds any organization operating unlawfully, or orders for the dissolution of any organization then the registrar must dissolve it following the period granted to settle finances.

Youth Ministry had suspended Maldivian Democracy Network after the controversial report surfaced and came to public attention.

The report had resulted in a public outrage while several religious scholars complemented similar sentiments and called out for immediate cessation of the group.

MDN’s report, originally released in 2015 had criticized the Maldivian education system making claims the rhetoric of several textbooks encouraged for religious extremism. The report had also emphasized several passages from Islamic sacred scripture; the Holy Quran to base their argument.

Though published in 2015, the report came to public attention this year sparking unpolarized outrage from the general public who called for immediate termination of MDN as well as punitive measures on those involved.
