Former Police Commissioner and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz has stated that the Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances has disclosed all information on the murder of former MP Dr Afrasheem Ali.
On October 2, 2012, the religious scholar was found brutally murdered in his residence’s stairwell. Abdulla Riyaz, who was the Police Commissioner at the time, had previously stated that when an ‘ appropriate platform ‘ was available, he would publicly disclose information about the murder of Afrasheem. The public raised concerns regarding his claim, asking why there is still no such forum.
Riyaz said on Tuesday, that the details of the murder investigation were disclosed to the Presidential Commission. He further revealed that he responded to all commission inquiries pertaining to the case of Afrasheem.
The commission had stated earlier this month on November 2, that it would soon disclose its findings on Dr. Afrasheem’s assassination and reveal those behind it.
While the commission previously revealed that the perpetrators behind the murder were identified, they confirmed that a report had been shared with the President’s Office on their investigation.
It is one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidential pledges to seek justice for the murder of Dr. Afrasheem. Recently, the commission investigating murders disclosed that extremist religious organisations were behind the murder of MP Afrasheem Ali, reporter Ahmed Rilwan and activist Yameen Rasheed.
