The Maldivian tourism sector remains buoyant, continuing ahead with strong performance in Q3 2019.
According to Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) Quarterly Economic Bulletin, tourist arrivals increased by 10% in annual terms.
Thus, the total number of arrivals for the review quarter was observed at 389,101.
Meanwhile the average bed-nights in tourism industry grew by 8% though average duration of stay dropped.
As per figures, the average duration of stay fell to 6.1 days in review quarter from 6.2 days in Q3-2019.
In addition, tourism receipts for the quarter are estimated at USD613.9 million – reflecting all the positive growth in the industry.
According to MMA’s bulletin the tourist arrivals to Maldives “continues to be driven by strong domestic demand in the main source markets.”
Moreover, this is coupled with increased air connectivity due to surge in flight movements from major carriers.
Furthermore, Blue Panorama’s commencement added to increased flight movements.
As such, the international flight movement increased by 20% in review quarter compared to the same period last year.
Thus, this was an increase of 1,000 flights for the third quarter of 2019 in comparison to the corresponding quarter in 2018.
Arrivals and Tourist Venues
As for tourist arrivals, increased arrivals from Europe and Asia and the Pacific region contributed to the overall growth in arrival numbers.
According to the bulletin data, Europe recorded an arrival growth of 12% – coming directly from improvement of source markets.
Meanwhile, Asia and the Pacific region observed a growth of 8%, which is contributed by growth in source markets including specific push from India.
The surge in arrivals from India, posted a staggering growth of 99.9% for the majority of 2019.
Furthermore, total number of operational resorts increased to 149 in Q3-2019 from 128 at Q3-2018.
Concurrently, guesthouses in operation increased by 73 year-on-year putting the total at 570.
Thus, increasing the operational bed capacity for the review quarter by 5,991.
As such, the total operational bed capacity by end of Q3-2019 was at 47,880 – a 14% increase in annual terms.
