Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee has passed a new amendment to the Employment’s Act mandating increased representation of locals in senior management roles in the tourism industry.
The new amendment proposed by MP of Ihavandhoo constituency Mohamed Shifau states that 60 percent of senior management positions and the prioritization of Maldivians to senior Human Resource roles should be required for any company with more than 50 employees working in the country’s tourism industry.
The amendment was passed by the committee after agreeing that the the amendments should be in effect within five years of being ratified.
