The Supreme court of the Maldives had stated that DNA could be used as evidence during court trails of fornication.
The Supreme court decided this during the last trail of man named Mohamed Taufeeg. The man was prosecuted as a woman claimed that a child birthed by her was a child conceived through fornication with the man and the DNA of the child matches to his.
He was prosecuted at Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo magistrate court.
However, Kudahuvadhoo magistrate court sentence him to not guilty as sharia law states that defendants must plead to guilty for the offence or the offence must generally be witnessed by at least four male persons in order to be proven.
Procecutor tried to appeal the sentence in high court. Hight court supported the senetcning of magistrate court.
