TheEconomicMinisterhasbeenrecommendedbytheSalariesandWagesAdvisoryBoardtosetMVR6,400asthenationalminimumwageandasumwithintherangeofMVR6,400toMVR8,400astheminimumwageforcivilservantsandtourismsectoremployees.LastweekEconomicMinisterFayyazIsmailsentParliamentareportfromtheCommission.AreportontherecommendationofthecommissionwasalsopublishedonthewebsiteoftheEconomicMinistry.HetoowhorecentlyannouncedplanstodeclareaminimumwagebeforetheendofFebruarythisyear.Inmakingitsconclusion,theBoardevaluatedtwofactors;monthlyfoodandotheressentialneedsexpensesperfamily,andlocaleconomicindicators.TheBoardalsorecommendedtheestablishmentofaseparateminimumwagefortourismforcivilservantsandtourismworkers;asumwithintherangeofMVR6,400—recommendedasthenationalminimumwage—andMVR8,600—recommendedbytheBoardafterfactoringinbasichouseholdexpenses.TheBoardsuggestedtheminimumwageshouldbeadjustedeveryfiveyears.

Climate Emergency in the Maldives

ParliamentpassedaresolutiononWednesdaydeclaringMaldivesaclimateemergency.Theresolution,tabledbyHoarafushiMPAhmedSaleem,seekstodrawglobalattentiontotheneedtomitigateclimatechangebeforetimerunsoutfortheworld.Duringitsreview,theCommitteeontheEnvironmentandClimateChangemadeseveralamendmentstotheresolution,oneofwhichwastorecognizetheeffectsofclimatechangefeltasemergenciesinMaldives. Thechangewasmadeamidpublicconcernaboutextremeerosionfeltinanumberofislandsduetoclimatechangeaswellastheobstructionofsandproductionandmovementdueto arbor andotherinfrastructureprojects.TherevisedresolutionwasadoptedonWednesdayafternoon,withthe voteof68parliamentarians.Climateemergenciessofarhavebeenproclaimedbyhundredsoflocalgovernmentsand25individualcountries,thefirstofwhichwasannouncedin2016.
