PM Modi’s Cricket Diplomacy With Maldives Praised By Indian Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s generous and thoughtful gesture of presenting a cricket bat signed by the Indian cricket team to the president of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has received words of praise and gratitude from the Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Modi captioned a picture on twitter, of himself presenting the bat to Solih, “Connected by cricket! My friend, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is an ardent cricket fan, so I presented him a cricket bat that has been signed by #TeamIndia playing at the #CWC19”.

Sachin stated that PM Narendra Modi presenting the bat to the President of Maldives, Mr Ibrahim Solih during the ongoing cricket world cup 2019 shows a good example of “cricket diplomacy”. He tweeted, “Thank you for promoting cricket, Narendra Modi Ji. A good example of cricket diplomacy during the @cricketworldcup. Hoping to see the Maldives on the cricketing map soon”.

Modi after being elected as PM of India for a second term visited the Maldives recently and had shown India’s keenness to assist and aid in whatever ways they can to foster cricket in the Maldives, ultimately accomplishing the president Solih’s mission to develop the sport in the country.

According to the Foreign Ministry of India, Maldivian cricket players are currently being trained and guided by India to help them achieve their full cricketing potential. “A team from the BCCI visited the Maldives earlier in May for training Maldivian cricketers, organising coaching programmes and supply kits”, further explains the foreign ministry.

A stadium might also be on the books for the Maldives as India is looking to aid in building one in the near future.
