CP Hameed death threats under inquiry

On Saturday 19th October, the Maldives Police Service announced the inquiry into death threats against Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed.

The police ensured a thorough investigation of all cases involving death threats.

CP Hameed has recently been publicly criticized for the case of a report published by the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) supposedly contradicting Islam’s values.

Critics point out that it could conflict with a fair investigation into the matter since the police commissioner had previously worked at the NGO.

An individual who expressed anger at the lack of action against MDN posted an online picture depicting Hameed with a sharp object being attacked.

In response to another tweet, the police said that while working with the police, Hameed was not affiliated with MDN. It was also revealed that for a short period of time Hameed only worked with MDN.

In its 2015 report  ‘Preliminary Assessment of Radicalisation in Maldives’ MDN, an NGO promoting human rights and democracy in the country was suspended.

While several members of the public claimed suspension was inadequate as a deterrent, police have opted to summon members of the MDN to investigate.
